With a career spanning 3 decades, pianist Bobby Lyle not only brings a wealth of experience to his Heads Up debut, he brings it Hands On.Twelve contemporary tracks, including 9 originals, celebrate life with the right mix of funk and tradition. Bobby Lyle’s latest is hip, heartfelt and Hands On.
Passion Drive opens in fine style setting the pace for this remarkable project. Lyle meets the mark then raises it, time and time again with songs including the atmospheric True Spirit, a melodic number with a hint of the tropics and El Paquito with a steady backbeat that underscores an acoustic piano melody. He takes the funk level a little deeper with the title track, Hands On and Joe Vincelli adds some amazing alto sax lines to it. Then you’ll be shakin’ your thing with Fancy Pants, a fun track featuring Dave Caseras on sax, Larry Spencer (trumpet), John Calderon (guitar), Keith Vivens (bass), and guitar solo by Brennen Nase.
Lyle covers three songs and if you like the Maurice White/Al McKay composition Best of My Love, you’ll love Lyle’s version complete with a fantastic horn section and upbeat acoustic piano. He stays true to Michael McDonald’s Minute By Minute and Todd Parsnow gives a smokin’ electric guitar performance. Then the classic Poinciana sets the mood on romantic as Lyle shows off some traditional jazz stylings and Parsnow complements with an acoustic guitar solo. Enjoy the slow burn of Lost in Our Love, Lyle’s original, co-written and performed with Peabo Bryson. This is a track that could easily crossover to R&B for a multi-genre hit.
Beth, a special song, for a special lady is the gorgeous finale to Bobby Lyle’s recent release and for those of you who prefer contemporary jazz with touches of tradition, this song and the entire CD will appeal to you. Hands On is a modern celebration of life and love. Do yourself a favor and get your hands on it!
